The Federal Hotel Nimmitabel: A Living Legacy and Paranormal Haven

A Historic Gem of the Monaro

Nestled in the heart of the Monaro region lies the Federal Hotel Nimmitabel, a living testament to history and community spirit. Established in the late 19th century by Thomas Moran, the hotel has stood as the “Heart of the Monaro” since its inception. Moran, an ambitious entrepreneur and fervent republican, saw the potential of the region as a bustling postal, freight, and passenger route. His vision led to the construction of Moran’s Federal Hotel, serving as an essential stopover from Goulburn to Eden.

Moran’s legacy extends beyond Nimmitabel. He built a series of Federal Hotels, including one in Bemboka and another in Bombala, catering to the growing needs of passengers and freight. Rumors of his lost fortune and his reputation as a stern and quick-tempered man only add to the mystique surrounding this iconic establishment.

Paranormal Activities at The Federal Hotel

Beyond its historical significance, the Federal Hotel is also renowned for its paranormal activities. Owner Kelvin Fahey has witnessed and heard numerous accounts of ghostly occurrences, adding another layer to the hotel’s allure.

  • Three known deaths have occurred within the hotel, with two specific locations identified.

  • Two births have been recorded, each with its unique tale.

  • A solitary female spirit is said to roam the upstairs hallways, with lights mysteriously turning on and off during the early hours.

  • CCTV cameras often capture motion in empty rooms, adding to the mystery.

  • Legends of hidden treasures, bootlegging, and seances conducted during the 1920s contribute to the hotel’s mystique.

While these paranormal activities might intrigue some, Fahey believes that the spirits are benevolent, adding to the hotel’s charm rather than causing harm.
